We want answers.

We want certainty.

We want control over outcomes, emotions, relationships, and circumstances because control feels safer than trust.

But eventually, many of us discover something painful:

The harder we try to control life, the more weary our hearts become.

And maybe that is why Jesus invites us to surrender.

Not because He wants to take something good from us.

But because He knows peace can only truly be found in Him.

We Were Never Meant to Carry Everything Alone

Many of us are carrying burdens we were never meant to hold by ourselves.

We carry fear about the future.

Disappointment from the past.

Pressure to keep everything together.

And the exhausting weight of trying to fix what only God can heal.

The world teaches us to depend on ourselves, but Jesus offers a different invitation.

Matthew 11:28–29 (ESV) says:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Rest for our souls.

What a beautiful promise.

Not temporary escape.

Not shallow comfort.

But deep spiritual rest found in the presence of Jesus.

The kind of peace that steadies the heart even when life still feels uncertain.

Why Surrender Feels So Hard

Surrender sounds beautiful in theory.

But in real life, surrender can feel frightening.

Because surrender requires trust.

It asks us to loosen our grip on control, fear, striving, pride, bitterness, and self-reliance. And honestly, many of us hold tightly to those things because they make us feel protected.

We think:

• If I stay in control, maybe I will not get hurt.

• If I can fix everything, maybe I will finally feel secure.

• If I understand every outcome first, maybe I can trust God later.

But faith rarely works that way.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV) says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Surrender asks us to trust God even when we cannot see the full picture.

And that can feel deeply uncomfortable.

But surrender is not weakness.

Surrender is choosing to trust the One who sees what we cannot.

The Peace That Comes Through Trusting Jesus

One of the greatest misconceptions about surrender is believing it means losing freedom.

But surrendering to Jesus is actually where freedom begins.

Freedom from striving.

Freedom from carrying impossible emotional weight.

Freedom from trying to save ourselves.

Freedom from searching for peace in places that can never truly satisfy.

John 14:27 (ESV) says:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

The peace Jesus offers is different from what the world offers.

The world’s peace depends on circumstances going well.

Jesus offers peace that remains even when life feels uncertain.

His peace steadies the heart when everything else feels unstable.

And the more we surrender our fears, questions, and burdens to Him, the more we begin experiencing the safety of resting in His love instead of relying on ourselves.

Sometimes Surrender Begins in Exhaustion

Honestly, I think many people come to surrender the same way I did:

Through exhaustion.

Not because they suddenly became spiritually strong.

But because they became tired of carrying everything alone.

There was a season in my life when I was emotionally exhausted, spiritually distant, and struggling deeply inside. I spent years trying to control my life while quietly running from God emotionally and spiritually because I did not understand how surrender could possibly bring peace.

But eventually, I reached the end of myself.

And that is often where surrender begins.

Psalm 34:18 (ESV) says:

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

At the time, I felt abandoned.

Looking back now, I can see God was still near to me even when I could not feel Him.

He was patient with me.

Faithful to me.

Gentle with me.

Even while I struggled.

And slowly, through surrender, my heart began softening toward Him again.

My Journey from Running to Rest

The more I learned about who Jesus truly is, the more I realized surrender was never about losing myself.

It was about finally resting in the hands of the One who loved me enough to die for me.

Romans 5:8 (ESV) says:

“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

That truth changed me.

Because Jesus did not wait for me to have everything together before loving me.

And He is not waiting for you either.

I’ve learned that this is often where prayer becomes most honest.

Not polished prayers.
Not impressive words.
Just quiet, sometimes awkward, often unfinished sentences offered to God anyway.

When life feels unforgiving, prayer isn’t about fixing the silence; it’s about staying connected in it.

God’s faithfulness doesn’t rise and fall with how close He feels. It’s rooted in who He is.

He was faithful when He saved us, not because we deserved it, but because He is rich in mercy. Long before we cleaned ourselves up or figured things out, He met us with grace. That alone settles so much of the fear we carry into our prayer lives.

He is faithful when relationships change, when people come and go, when support looks different than we expected. Sometimes His faithfulness shows up through the people He brings into our lives, and sometimes through the ones He gently removes.

And He is faithful in His love.

Unconditional.
Unwavering.
Not earned on our good days or withdrawn on our bad ones.

Prayer becomes the place where we remember these truths. Not because life suddenly feels easier, but because our hearts are re-anchored in what doesn’t change.

If prayer feels hard right now, that doesn’t mean you’re failing spiritually. It may simply mean you’re learning how faith holds when emotions don’t cooperate.

Sometimes prayer sounds like, “God, I don’t feel close to You, but I’m still here.”
Sometimes it’s silence.
Sometimes it’s showing up with nothing but trust.

And sometimes, that’s enough.

Ecclesiastes 1:8 says it perfectly:

“All this monotony is tiresome; no one can bear to describe it: The eye is never satisfied with seeing, nor the ear ever content with hearing.”

That verse hits deep, doesn’t it? No matter how much we achieve or collect, it never fills the longing inside. And that’s because nothing in this world was meant to.

The Real Problem: We’re Searching in the Wrong Places

The world keeps whispering, “If you just had more, you’d finally be happy.”
But every “more” leaves us wanting something else.

Our hearts were never designed to be satisfied by temporary things — not possessions, not success, not approval. They were designed to be filled by God.

When we forget that truth, life starts to feel like an endless loop of striving and disappointment.

Why It Happens: The Illusion of “If Only”

We convince ourselves that happiness is just one achievement away.
“If only I had what she has…”
“If only life looked a little more exciting…”

But “if only” keeps us chasing what fades. It’s a spiritual mirage — always promising refreshment but never delivering.

Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well,

“Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” (John 4:14)

He wasn’t talking about literal water. He was talking about Himself — the only source that truly satisfies.

The Better Way: Let God Fill the Emptiness

Here are a few truths that have reshaped how I approach those dry, monotonous seasons:

1. Reconnect with the Source.
Spend time with God — not to check a box, but to refill your soul. Even five quiet minutes of prayer or Scripture can bring more peace than a day of distraction.

2. Practice Gratitude.
Comparison kills joy, but gratitude revives it. Start naming what God has already done for you. You’ll find your heart softening toward His goodness.

3. Slow Down.
Busyness is often a mask for emptiness. Jesus withdrew often to rest and pray — and if He needed to, so do we.

4. Serve Others.
When you pour into others, your own cup fills in ways you never expected. The monotony fades when life becomes about love.

What Happens When You Let God Satisfy You

When you let God take His rightful place in your heart, something beautiful happens:

• Peace replaces pressure.

• Ordinary days feel meaningful.

• Gratitude grows where discontent once lived.

• And joy — real joy — takes root and stays.

The truth is, monotony isn’t the enemy. Misplaced desire is. The longing you feel is an invitation from God to come closer, to trade empty striving for the fullness of His presence.

At first, I smiled. But then I walked away scratching my head. Doesn’t saying in charge make it sound like God is just supervising at a distance, almost as if He could be ignored? And yet, the phrase in control can sometimes be misused too—tossed out as a quick answer that glosses over real pain.

That moment left me wondering: Is there really a difference between the two? And if there is, which one is more biblical?

Breaking Down the Phrases

• God is in control usually points to His sovereignty. Nothing happens outside of His authority.

• God is in charge points to His kingship. He reigns as Lord over all creation.

Neither phrase is wrong—but each can be misunderstood if taken too far. That’s why we need both.

Scripture Paints a Bigger Picture

The Bible is full of reminders of both truths:

• “Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.” (Psalm 115:3) → God is in control

• “The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19) → God is in charge

Together, these verses give us balance: God sovereignly directs history, and He actively reigns as King.

How Jesus Lived This Out

Jesus Himself trusted the Father in both ways:

• In Gethsemane He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42) → trusting God’s control

• After His resurrection, He declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18) → affirming God’s kingship

Jesus lived with confidence in both truths—and showed us how to follow Him with the same trust.

Why This Matters for Us

Holding on to both truths keeps us steady:

• When life feels uncertain: God is in control—He hasn’t lost track of you.

• When life feels overwhelming: God is in charge—He is leading with authority and love.

• When life feels unfair: Both are true—He controls what seems chaotic and reigns over what seems unjust.

Here’s a simple prayer you can use:
“God, You are in control and in charge—I trust You.”

Safe in His Hands

So, is it better to say God is in control or in charge? The answer is: yes. Both.

When you hold onto both sides of this truth, you can face life with peace. God is not only sovereignly in control but lovingly in charge of every detail of your life.
